Safari outfit for women: what to wear, morning to sundowner

Quick answerThe best safari outfit for women is a set of layers in neutral colors like khaki, olive and tan: lightweight long pants, a breathable top, a long-sleeve sun shirt and a fleece for cold mornings. Add a wide-brimmed hat, a scarf or buff for dust and closed walking shoes, and skip dark blue, black and camouflage.

Packing for safari as a woman comes down to one idea: layers in soft, neutral colors that keep you comfortable from a cold 6 a.m. game drive to a warm sundowner. You don't need a closet of special "safari" clothes. You need a handful of pieces that mix, wash easily and fit in a small soft bag.

We spent three weeks in Kenya on our honeymoon, with my wife and my father-in-law along, moving from Laikipia to Lake Nakuru, the Maasai Mara and Tsavo. The days had a rhythm, and dressing for that rhythm is what this guide is about.

Colors to wear (and avoid)

Stick with khaki, olive, tan, stone, soft brown and muted greens. These colors hide dust, don't stand out to wildlife and stay cooler than dark shades in the midday sun.

  • Skip dark blue and black in tsetse areas. Tsetse flies are drawn to these colors, and their bites hurt. Neutral tones plus an insect repellent are the simple fix.
  • Go easy on bright white. It looks great in photos for about an hour, then the red dust of the Mara settles in.
  • Leave camouflage at home. Camo is associated with the military in East Africa, and civilians are prohibited from wearing it in neighboring Tanzania. It's easiest to avoid it everywhere in the region.

A safari outfit, morning to sundowner

Time of dayWhat to wear
Early game drive (around 6 a.m.)Long pants, a breathable base layer, a fleece or light puffer, a scarf or buff, and a warm hat. Open vehicles are cold before sunrise, especially in the highlands of Laikipia.
Mid-morning to afternoonPeel down to a long-sleeve sun shirt or a short-sleeve top, with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Keep the fleece in your daypack.
Late-afternoon driveThe same base outfit, with a light layer ready as the sun drops.
Sundowner and dinnerA fresh top or a simple dress with leggings, a warm layer and closed shoes. Long sleeves and pants help keep mosquitoes off after dark.

Our sundowner in the Land Cruiser in the Mara was one of the best evenings of the trip, and it cooled down fast once the sun was gone. A packable jacket earns its space for moments like that.

Women's safari packing list

This list works for about a week to ten days, assuming you use the camp laundry, which most lodges offer.

  • 2 pairs of lightweight pants: quick-dry travel pants or convertible zip-offs.
  • 1 pair of leggings or joggers: for flights, evenings and lounging at camp.
  • 1 pair of shorts or a skirt: for time at the lodge. Most game drives are better in pants.
  • 3 to 4 tops: a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve, in breathable fabric.
  • 1 or 2 button-up sun shirts: the most useful layer on safari.
  • 1 fleece or light down jacket, plus a light rain shell if you're traveling in a rainy season.
  • 1 simple dress or jumpsuit: nice for dinners, and easy to wear with leggings when it's cool.
  • A comfortable sports bra or two: bumpy roads make this a real comfort item.
  • Scarf or buff: keeps dust off your face and warms your neck in the morning.
  • Wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap: wind in an open vehicle takes hats away.
  • Closed walking shoes or trail sneakers, plus sandals for camp.
  • Swimsuit: many lodges have a pool.
  • Sleepwear with long sleeves: tents and lodges can be chilly at night.

Fabrics that work best

  • Quick-dry synthetics and blends wash in a sink and dry overnight.
  • Merino wool is warm on cold mornings and resists odor over several days.
  • Linen and cotton feel great in heat, but they wrinkle and take longer to dry.
  • Built-in sun protection (UPF) is handy on long, bright days on the plains.

Dressing for village visits and towns

If your trip includes a visit to a Maasai village, as ours did near the Mara, modest clothing is a simple sign of respect. Covered shoulders and pants or a skirt to the knee or below work well. The same goes for walking around towns. Ask your guide if you're unsure, and always ask before taking photos of people. Our post on Maasai culture has more on visiting respectfully.

Luggage limits and what to pack it in

If your itinerary includes small-plane flights between parks, many airlines in Kenya cap luggage at around 15 kg (33 lb) per person, including your carry-on, and ask for a soft bag with no wheels or frame. Limits vary by airline and aircraft, so check yours before you pack. A soft duffel (opens in a new tab) and packing cubes make a small wardrobe easy to manage.

Kenya also bans single-use plastic carrier bags, so pack toiletries and dirty laundry in reusable pouches instead of plastic shopping bags.

A few more tips

  • Wear your bulkiest layers on the plane to save weight in your bag.
  • Bring a small crossbody bag for your phone, lip balm and sunscreen during drives.
  • Pack a headlamp. Paths at camp can be dark at night.
  • Keep jewelry simple. Leave valuables at home.
  • Dust gets everywhere. Sunglasses and a buff help a lot on dry-season drives.

Frequently asked questions

What colors should women wear on safari?

Neutral, earthy colors such as khaki, olive, tan and soft brown work best. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies, and leave camouflage at home.

Can I wear shorts or a dress on safari?

Yes, especially around the lodge and at dinner. On game drives, long pants are more practical because mornings are cold and they protect your legs from sun and insects.

What shoes should I wear on safari?

Comfortable closed shoes such as trail sneakers or light hiking shoes work for drives and walks. Pack sandals for camp. Heavy hiking boots usually aren't needed unless you plan serious walking.

How many outfits do I need for a one-week safari?

About three or four tops, two or three bottoms and one warm layer are enough for most people, since many lodges offer laundry. Keep everything light if you have small-plane flights with a 15 kg limit.

What should I wear to visit a Maasai village?

Modest clothing is a good choice: covered shoulders and pants or a skirt to the knee or below. Ask your guide if you're unsure and always ask before photographing people.
